Subject: Keep working for housing affordability in Tukwila!

Message:

Everyone in our community must have a safe, healthy, and affordable home to work, learn, stay healthy, and contribute to their communities. We know that in today's housing market, both renters and home owners alike, especially those with low incomes, struggle to afford this basic need. <br>123,000 households in King County are paying over half of their income on housing, which means their housing can be easily jeopardized by life challenges like medical expenses, a job loss, or vehicle repairs. Rising rents experienced by every city in the county have been tied to regional increases in homelessness by research from King County, Zillow, and most recently, McKinsey. As of the 2017 Point in Time Count, about 12,000 people had no place to call home at all. <br>Along with other affordable housing advocates across King County, I am participating in Affordable Housing Week this year by urging you to take action. Please take the time to look deeply at what you as a City Council can do to promote affordable homes in our city - for example, by enacting policies that help to preserve existing affordable homes, that enact inclusionary zoning programs, that provide tenants with additional protections, or that explore donating or discounting surplus public land. I particularly hope that the Tukwila City Council will take steps toward collaborating with other South King County cities to align our efforts and better communicate and coordinate around this important issue. <br>I know that with cities, school districts, and community organizations working together, we can sustain and expand on the important work that is already happening in our city. By working together to bring attention to the importance of affordable housing and by discussing potential policy solutions for our own local context, we can turn the tide to ensure all people have access to a safe, healthy, affordable home in all of our communities.
