Our state is facing an immense housing affordability crisis. While this effects us all, the crisis disproportionately impacts low-income households and increases the risk of pushing people at the margins into homeless. We must rise to the challenge and act now to meet the housing needs of our neighbors.

New data from the Department of Commerce projects that Washington will need over 1.1 million new homes by 2044. The overwhelming majority of this need is for low-income households. This need can only be met with significant public investment in affordable housing.

This statewide crisis demands bold action and the Affordable Homes Act would create a revenue source that will make secure housing a reality for thousands of households across the state.

Dear House Democratic Leadership, I am writing to urge your support and swift passage of HB 1628, the Affordable Homes Act. The housing affordability crisis is the issue of our time, and it will take all of us coming together to act at the scale that we need. This bill’s consistent and sizable investment would expand the supply of affordable homes for low- and moderate-income households throughout Washington state and create the foundation of healthy and vibrant communities. Rapidly increasing housing costs, population growth, and chronic underproduction has led to a substantial shortage of affordable housing, making low-income residents increasingly vulnerable to homelessness. Department of Commerce data projects that Washington will require an additional 1.1 million homes by 2044, with nearly 650,000 of those designated for low-income people. Because the private market does not sufficiently build housing for the low-income population, this need can only be met through bold public investment. Our housing crisis requires bold action. The Affordable Homes Act invests in affordable housing at the scale we need. We urge your support of HB 1628 and to make affordable housing a priority throughout the state. Thank you,
